Professor Sun Min of EE is the chief AI scientist of Appier

Tsing Hua University's electrical engineering and industry have more and more cooperation. The Chinese world's artificial intelligence (AI) star, 66 AI research is cited in Google's academic search 2,380 times, and two US patents, Tsing Hua EE, Professor Sun Min, will be seconded to the startup “Appier” as the chief artificial intelligence scientist. Professor Sun Min said that he will be ready to accept this challenge and hope to bring more artificial intelligence innovation to the academic community from an industrial perspective.

Professor Sun Min has a master's degree in Stanford electrical enginneering (the mentor is Wu Enda who worked for Google and Baidu, and now cooperates with Guo Taiming), and the Ph.D. in the Motor System Group of Angbao, Michigan (the instructor is Li Feifei, the chief scientist of Google Cloud artificial intelligence and machine learning). AI scholar Silvio Savarese) and post-doctoral experience in computer engineering at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Professor Liu Jingjia, the head of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tsing Hua University, said: "The electrical research of the Electrical Engineering Department of Tsing Hua University is extremely high in AI-related research. It also encourages the exchange and cultivation of industry and university talents. Sun Min is a world-class AI scholar and is committed to promoting Taiwan. Students enter the leading research of AI, and believe that through the cooperation with Appier, the actual application of AI in the industry and academic circle can bring more innovation momentum to Taiwan's AI industry.

Professor Sun Min believes that artificial intelligence is mainly to solve the important problems of human beings and to do important tasks. Tsing Hua EE has a very good artificial intelligence research environment and lots of talents. In order to understand the current application of academic AI technology in the industry, the academic community must also introduce the ideas of the AI industry, so as not to produce the so-called industry-school gap, and hope that through his personal experience, he can lead the research direction of future laboratories.

Although Professor Sun Min was seconded to Appier as the chief artificial intelligence scientist, he will continue to teach at Tsing Hua EE. In the new semester, he will teach the "Computer Vision Course". Even in the industry, Professor Sun Min continues to care about students' learning.

Professor Sun Min, a professor of the Visual Science Laboratory (VSLab) and a student of the Tsing Hua Electrical Machinery Institute, said that he is quite supportive of the teacher to the industry as the chief AI scientist. Although the teacher will become busier, it will still have meeting with students for two days a week. Even if you can't discuss with the teacher face-to-face, you can still communicate with the teacher at any time. The teacher continues to try to lead the research of the lab students. More often, you can share the latest AI development in the industry and benefit the students. In the long run, it is quite positive for the laboratory.

Tsing Hua EE's senior student Lin Biao said that artificial intelligence is to solve the actual problem, the teacher to the industry to hold important positions, so that the laboratory can also access the AI business application that was previously unknown, or introduce the idea of the industry AI, let us Students can get more exposure when conducting research; in addition, research that was previously unsuccessful in the laboratory, such as too time-consuming and labor-intensive, is easier if the resources of the industry are available.
