abstract
PAPR (Peak-to-Average Power Ratio) reduction is an important and interesting problem for OFDM systems. Recently, fountain codes, when served as packet-level codes, were proposed to deal with this problem [1-3]. The basic idea stemmed from providing selectable connection patterns in encoding a fountain packet. Hence, the PAPR performance is improved and similar to that of a conventional SLM (SeLective Mapping) method. However, much less gain on PAPR performance is observed if a fountain packet is carried by multiple OFDM symbols. Owing to inherently different lengthy packets existing in wireless networks, we propose an interleaving scheme which interleaves long packets and short packets in transmissions and provides selectable connection patterns only in encoding a short fountain packet. Besides a uniform signal constellation, a non-uniform or hierarchical one can also be applied for OFDM systems employing this scheme. Theoretical analyses and simulation results show that the proposed design provides as good performance as that provided by the scheme in [2].
