Abstract:

Video coding is one of the important technological advancements that have made a great difference to our lives. In the past decade, the development of efficient coding techniques contributes to the easy access and spread of videos while more video applications, such as wireless or internet video, HDTV and UHDTV, continue the quest for higher coding efficiency. Many techniques have been developed and evolved through several generations of video coding standards, e.g., MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.261, H.263 and H.264. However, “What is next” has become the most frequently asked question among scholars of the field. This talk first introduces the history of the development of video coding standards. Next, the second part presents the newest accomplishments, exchanges latest experiences, and explores future directions in this important and evolving field. This talk then concludes with research prospectus in video coding related fields.
