Abstract:
Wireless video distribution has become the major traffic and main application in current wireless networks. Unlike plain data, the compressed video stream exhibits different characteristics, such as high decoding dependency, non-linear response from human visual system, and redundancy in both spatial and temporal domain. Additional strict delay constraint is imposed when real-time streaming application is deployed. To provide satisfactory video quality for real-time video application, it is critical to efficiently utilize the limited system resources, including the adopted video applications and the chosen wireless networks. The problem will become even more challenging in a multi-user scenario where each user encodes/transmits different video content with different motion activity, experiences different channel condition, and shares the limited network bandwidth. In this talk, we focus on the multi-user video distribution problem from the resource allocation's point of view. We first study a multi-user video conferencing system in WLAN by jointly optimizing all users' uplink/downlink channels and video characteristics. With exploration of multi-dimensional diversity, the proposed system can significantly outperform the traditional approach. We then study a multi-user streaming system in a full-fledged application-aware cooperative network, where the relay node is equipped with advanced application layer tools, such as side information generation and video processing capability, to enhance the overall reconstructed video quality.
