Abstract:

   Diabetes is one of the top death causing diseases in the world. Currently, about 100 million people in the world suffer from diabetes and the huge medical care cost is a great burden on the society.  Frequent blood glucose monitoring can improve the long-term health of diabetic patients by decreasing the complications of neuropathies, blindness, and hypoglycemia.  An enzyme-based finger-pricking method is the most commonly used technology in diabetic assessment. Diabetic patients are required to invasively draw blood 5-6 times a day to determine their blood sugar levels. However, this procedure is painful and inconvenient and requires the compliance of patients. As a result, there is a growing demand for a continuous, noninvasive glucose level monitoring system.

   Unlike blood and body fluid, tears are directly accessible and provide a unique opportunity to develop a chemical interface between a sensor and the body. The eye provides a low scattering window for noninvasively monitoring as much health information as the blood since tears house a variety of physiological analytes, including glucose levels. Integrating a glucose sensor on a contact lens would provide a way to continuously and reliably sense metabolites in tear fluid without a separate sampling process and cause minimal disturbance to the eye.

   This talk will discuss potential challenges of the microelectronic contact lens and present the first active glucose sensor on the contact lens for wireless health monitoring.

 

Biography:

Yu-Te Liao received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from National Cheng-Kung   University, Tainan, Taiwan, in 2003, the M.S. degree in electronics engineering from National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan, in 2005, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Washington, Seattle, in 2011. In August 2011, he joined the Electrical Engineering Department, National Chung-Cheng University, Chiayi, Taiwan, where he is currently an assistant professor.  His research interests are the design of low power RF integrated circuits, integrated sensors, and biomedical circuits and systems.
