Abstract

   Biomedical information, including physiological signals, biomedical imaging, and bioinformatics, is conventionally processed through general-purpose processors due to the easy programmability. General-purpose processors provide higher flexibility for implementing any algorithms, however, at the cost of higher power consumption compared with other computing platforms, such as application-specific IC (ASIC) and field programmable gate array (FPGA). Due to the growing complexity of biomedical information, time- and energy-efficient computing is needed, making low-power computing platforms attractive for specific applications. In this talk, we will introduce the development of VLSI signal processing for computation-intensive and energy- constrained biomedical applications using FPGAs and ASICs. The design strategies for the hardware-oriented computing will be reviewed and discussed. Several developed systems for biomedical applications will be used to demonstrate the computation speedup and energy reduction.
