The AI electronic nose can know whether you got lung cancer in three to five minutes. Zheng Gui-Zhong, a professor at the NTHU EE Department, researched and developed the AI electronic nose, which can quickly detect pneumonia and lung cancer by blowing at it. It was exhibited at the Gloria Hall in Taipei International Computer Show yesterday.

Ministry of Science and Technology helps 15 universities establish industry-university alliance
The Ministry of Science and Technology has established the Gloria International Industry-University cooperation with fifteen universities in Taiwan. It plans to invest 400 million yuan in four years to assist domestic universities to cooperate with world-class companies. Last year, a total of 15 schools were subsidized. This year, the COMPUTEX created a Gloria Hall, presenting top-notch technology and research from various universities. Yesterday, 11 international companies including IBM, Kneron, Quanta Computer, ASE, Microsoft signed a contract to join the project, preparing to challenge the industry with the academic community.
Chen Liang-Ji, Minister of Science and Technology, said that the expo exhibited many technologies combined with medical care. The academic community was driven by Gloria, and the technology of the laboratory was combined with trends, such as NCTU provides services such as Kneron chip design to wafer placement and talent recruitment. National Chung Hsing Univ. provides the latest biologics technology for Jiahe Biotech, develops products, and establishes a base in North America.
Yesterday, the AI electronic nose research conducted by NTHU and the Taipei Medical University team was also quite eye-catching. In the top ten causes of deaths of the Chinese people in 2006, pneumonia has reached to the third place, and appears in the top ten list every year. The past inspections of pneumonia are quite time-consuming and often take three to five days, through computerized tomography, X-ray, etc. Moreover, it is necessary to cultivate the bacteria from the patient's specimen to diagnose whether the patient has pneumonia or lung cancer. Zheng Gui-Zhong, professor of the NTHU EE, collaborated with Professor Shi Chong-Hong, professor of Taipei Medical University, developed an AI electronic nose, the inspections can be conducted only by breath.
It only takes 3 to 5 minutes to get the result
Zheng Gui-Zhong’s student Wang Xuan-He explained that the breath emitted by lung cancer patients is different from that of the average person. The breath can be detected by electronic nose screening, and the possible bacterial components can be speculated to see if there is lung cancer. The detection process is faster and can be detected earlier, have the treatment as well.
"The results will be known in three to five minutes." Student Chen Li-Ying pointed out that after the user blows the air bag, the machine will analyze the components in the air bag. The system is currently undergoing clinical trials, and the electronic nose sensor matrix contains eight to nine different polymer material wafer sensors. When the odor molecules of different components are in contact with the sensor, the data can be collected and compared with the database to compare the odor type.
