Title: Breaking the boundaries inside heterogeneous computers

Abstract: As computer becomes multithreaded and heterogenous, we still leverage the same system abstractions and incur inefficiencies. This problem significantly underutilizes modern system components and affects the performance, especially when the computer needs to deal with a huge amount of data. In this talk, Hung-Wei will introduce his work in improving the data exchange among system components which can speedup database applications by up to 250x. Hung-Wei will also talk about through revisiting the hardware/software interface between data storage and the host computer, we can improve key-value store performance by 2.5x. Hung-Wei will also demonstrate by rethinking the roles of data storage and computing devices inside the computer, we can accelerate general-purpose benchmark applications by 1.39x.
Bio: Hung-Wei is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, NC State University where he is now leading the Extreme Storage & Computer Architecture Laboratory. Prior to joining NCSU, Hung-Wei was a postdoctoral scholar of the Non-volatile Systems Laboratory with Professor Steven Swanson and a lecturer of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at University of California, San Diego. His thesis work with Professor Dean Tullsen, data-triggered threads, was selected by IEEE Micro "Top Picks from Computer Architecture" in 2012.
