Tsing Hua University's student Zhao Da-Xuan, went to the United States to participate in the annual "Model United Nations General Assembly (MUN)" in February this year, he defeated the elites from all over the world, and won the Position Paper Award.

The Model United Nations General Assembly (MUN) is a conference hosted by the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA). WFUNA is an official UN agency with more than 70 years of history. Its secretary-general and officials are current UN officials and participate in conference training.

Each year, "Model Alliance" attracts outstanding young people from all over the world, emulates the UN and relevant international agencies, follows the rules of procedure of international conferences, and simulates real-world discussions on global issues. Young students play diplomats from various countries, emulate other countries' positions, explain their positions on behalf of the state through public speeches, integrate national opinions through debates or lobbying, implement democratic rules of voting in the rules of the General Assembly, and finally simulate the writing of legally valid resolutions.

In this way, students can familiarize themselves with the operational mechanism of the United Nations and discuss issues such as arms embargoes, counter-terrorism actions, education rights, environmental conservation, and sustainable development with other national student representatives to understand the impact of major events in the world on their future and experience.

Tsing Hua Model United Nations Society has a total of 9 students to represent Tsing Hua to participate in the model association. Only Zhao Da-Xuan won the award, and the only one in Taiwan won the award. Zhao Da-Xuan admits that the most difficult part of participating in the model association is to tell his own ideas very well, so he should quickly digest it before telling his own ideas. In addition, he also needs to understand the representatives of other countries. The model league is a full-day meeting for several days, which is very intensive, he needs to keep his thinking and logic all the times.

When talking about the competition, Zhao Da-Xuan recalled that at the end of last year, he was notified that the model association would arrange for himself to speak as a diplomat representing New Zealand. As a spokesperson for New Zealand, Zhao Da-Xuan needs to fully understand the relevant historical background, economy, national development and other current issues, and must write a position paper to the conference as a New Zealand diplomat. Only when we are fully acquainted with this country can we can calmly debate at the conference.

For the students at the third year of the EE department, they are facing the busiest stage full of practical topics, internships, and professional subjects. Zhao Da-Xuan can only use his spare time to write a position paper. In a concise and methodical way, he explained New Zealand's position on international issues in his position papers, reflecting English writing ability, international outlook, analytical ability, logical thinking and so on. Finally, He won the Position Paper Award.

Zhao Da-Xuan went to New York in January 2018 to participate the three-day mock UN conference, and gathered with representatives of various countries. The conference distributed the players from each country into four major economies. Zhao Da-Xuan was assigned to the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) economy. He also served as the head of the economy and discussed with the leaders of the other three major economies on the topic. On the one hand, he has to speak on behalf of the country on the issue of national interests, and on the other hand, on behalf of ASEAN, to find the greatest balance between the interests of the countries in the economy. This dialogue process constantly tested the English debate ability and leadership of the players in various countries, which made Zhao Da-Xuan most impressed.

Zhao Da-Xuan, who likes English since childhood, said that because he was a small diplomatic soldier from high school, he often gave an impromptu English speech. After attending Tsing Hua University, he immediately joined the Tsing Hua Model United Nations Society. Zhao Da-Xuan said that he likes to go through various international issues on weekdays. He suggested that the students who want to participate in MUN can practice English, think about various international issues, maintain ideas and clear mind.

"Although I like to participate in international affairs activities, I still want to combine my own EE expertise with my career expertise. I will also want to be an engineer in the future." Zhao Da-Xuan smiled and said, "Being a diploma is also an option, I hoping to maintain my interests." At this stage, he doesn’t set any limit, hoping to grasp the field of interest in college time and give himself a wonderful college life.
