NTHU established Sports Technology Center. "Love" baseball with AI.

In recent years, our school has devoted efforts to AI artificial intelligence and applications. Now it has decided to apply AI to our national ball-“baseball” and announce the establishment of "Tsing Hua Sports Technology Center". The first step will be promoting the "AI Baseball Project", integrating the latest technologies such as big data analysis, sensing technology, biomechanics, and artificial intelligence with baseball training. In addition to helping domestic baseball players improve their performance and reduce sports injuries, we also want to bring this latest smart baseball system to the world.

The consultant convener of the Sports Science and Technology Center will be Cheng-Wen Wu, a distinguished professor of Electrical Engineering department and also the formerly pitcher of Giant junior baseball team. A total of 10 professors from 5 departments including department of Electrical Engineering, department of Physical Education, department of Computer Science, department of Power Mechanical Engineering, and department of Industrial Engineering, plus 1 orthopedic surgeon and 2 off-campus teachers, in order to create an artificial intelligence baseball training system.

Professor Cheng-Wen Wu said that with the cross-domain integration of the professors' expertise, our school will develop a set of analysis and evaluation system for the baseball player's state. By applying of Bluetooth wireless transmission, a mobile phone can monitor the data. In addition to analyzing the player's current state, it is also possible to predict the future. "Taiwan's sensing technology is first-class. We can realize it with lower cost and we can make goods right away." This would help Taiwan's sports technology be industrialized.

The AI Baseball System will fully take care of the training needs of baseball players. For example, Prof. Hong-Kuo Chu from the Department of Computer Science developed a “3D Human Body Model Simulation”. With a single camera, you can use the image signal to analyze the dynamic skeleton movement of the human body and assist the players in correcting the pitching posture and reduce injuries. Professor Po-Chiun Huang of the EE department developed the "Intelligent Insole", which can instantly display and record the pressure of the player's foot and the trajectory of the center of gravity of the left and right feet.

After the school combination with NHCUE, we added a sports department. This also became the key to TsingHua's successful integration of sports and technology research. Professor Wu said that the laboratory of the Department of Physical Education led by prof. Wen-Hsin Chiu, had high-speed cameras, human musculoskeletal simulation systems, and many other athletes and coaches who could provide first-handed experience. NTHU will hold the "National Baseball Technology Requirement Symposium", inviting the primary and secondary school baseball team coaches to join the development and application of the smart baseball system.

Hong-Jun Wang, a senior in the Department of Computer Science who participated in the "3D Human Body Model Simulation" study, said that he had participated in a baseball club in high school and found that many pitchers were injured in pitching postures. Both shoulders and ankles were injured. One of his friends was even forced to give up his baseball career after injured. "The best thing about love baseball program is to help players reduce their sports injuries." Hong-Yi Wang is now a football goalkeeper. He believes that "3D human posture simulation" can also be applied to football training in the future.
