Abstract:
With the popularity of mobile devices equipped with location-sensing technology, a variety of location-based applications and services have progressively permeated people's daily life. However, such growth trend will lead to a significant boost in mobile data traffic and, consequently, result in further pressure on the limited batter capacity of mobile devices. Thus, reducing the communication energy is an imminent challenge in stimulating the development of emerging location-based mobile applications.
In this talk, I will present a new concept, introducing signal strength into location-based applications, with which mobile devices can reduce the communication energy for data reception. To prove the concept, I have implemented a virtual tour system, where the fundamental problem is modeled as a data fetch scheduling problem and optimally solved by a dynamic-programming algorithm. The solution involves scheduling the fetching of location-based information at appropriate locations so as to minimize the total energy consumption, without impacting the application’s semantics adversely. Finally, through the experiment evaluation and the postoptimal analysis, the concept is proved practicable towards signal strength fluctuations.
