[Abstract] Computational anatomy, or morphometry, concentrates upon the quantitative analysis of brain structure, such as gyrification study and the examination of anatomical size and shape. Neuroimaging as well as image processing techniques are extensively utilized in this emerging field. In this talk, we will present two key computerized methods of morphometry: brain extraction and registration, which can be applied to remove the non-brain tissues followed by normalizing brain structures into a standard stereotaxtic space. Moreover, we will also discuss the construction of customized brain template for neuropathological studies. Morphometric analysis results using these techniques revealed distinct patterns in patients of major depressive and bipolar disorders, compared to normal controls.
