Additional Courses Requirements for Graduate Students

  • Important requirements for the graduate students’s courses grade.

Apart from the Master’s Thesis, if you are not able to reach the mininum grade of all the courses in the current semester, then our Department, Academic Affairs and Degree Program will hold a meeting to discuss about your eligibility in continuing your study in NTHU. If there is an agreement in the meeting, then you might have to drop out from NTHU.

Therefore, every Master and PhD student has to pay attention in the course selections each semester in order to avoid this kind of event happening. Otherwise, if you only take 1 course in the current semester and you fail the course, then there is a possibility that you will be dropped out from NTHU.

  • Graduate students’ courses requirements from Division of Curriculum online announcement.

Every graduate student is required to take 1 course every semester. (Master Thesis or Thesis Research is also counted)

Master Thesis” or “Thesis Research” will be selected automatically by the system: According to our Department regulations, every Master and PhD student is required to take “Master Thesis” or “Thesis Research” from the second or third year of study. You do not need to select this course by yourself because our system will select this course automatically.

For the first year Master and PhD students, if you are need to take "Master Thesis" or "Thesis Research" due to particular reasons, then you need to submit "Enrollment Form" for both of these courses. 

  • Academic Research Ethics” Required course from NTHU

From 2015, all of our Master and PhD students are required to finish this course prior to the end of first year of study.

This is an online-based course with 0 credit. Every student has to reach the mininum grade from the examination to pass this course. If you are failed to do so, then you are not eligible to take the oral examination for your Master or PhD degree.

  • Master students’ mandatory courses and credits requirements.

Apart from the mandatory courses, 2 credits of "Seminar" for 2 semesters and 4 credits "Master Thesis," you are required to take 24 credits that are acknowledged by our Department. You are also allowed to take  NTHU undergraduate courses (up to 6 credits and not limited in any department courses) if your advisor allows you to do so.  

However, if on the current master program, you happened to take the undergraduate courses with the same course number, course title, and taught by the same instructor as on your undergraduate program before, the credits of these courses will not be counted as your master's graduation credit. 

Another additional requirements:

  • In the 7th Professors meeting 2012, it is agreed that “EE6010 Basic Academic Paper Writing” or any other language and writing related courses will not longer be counted as Graduation Credits. If you would like to take other courses that are not against the Departments rules, then your advisor will have to determine whether you are allowed to take them or not. Therefore, you have to consult with your advisor which courses to take that are in line with your research directions and our Department’s regulations. You also need to enter the Advisor’s password prior to the end of selection course period.
  • If you are intended to take undergraduate courses and would like to be counted as Graduation Credits, then you need to submit an application form to our Department office, along with your advisor's agreement. Also, please kindly remember to attach your undergraduate transcript along with your application.

  • PhD students mandatory courses and credits requirements.

Apart from the mandatory courses and “Thesis” , you are required to take 18 credits that are acknowledged by our Department. For direct pursuit PhD students, you are required to take 30 credits that are acknowledged by our Department.

Another additional requirements:

  • In the 7th Professors meeting 2012, it is agreed that “EE6010 Basic Academic Paper Writing” or any other language and writing related courses will not longer be counted as Graduation Credits. If you would like to take other courses that are not against the Departments rules, then your advisor will have to determine whether you are allowed to take them or not. Therefore, you have to consult with your advisor which courses to take that are in line with your research directions and our Department’s regulations. You also need to enter the Advisor’s password prior to the end of selection course period.
  • Every undergraduate courses will not longer be counted as Graduation Credits for PhD students. If you need to take undergraduate courses for your Qualification Examination, then you can redeem those course credits as your Qualification Examination credits, but those credits will not be counted as your Graduation Credits.
  • If you happened to take undergraduate courses when you were master student prior to direct pursuit of PhD program and these courses were counted as graduation credits, these undergraduate courses will no longer be counted as graduation credits in your PhD program.

Please pay a close attention to these requirements, so that you can apply for Qualification Exam or Oral Defense without any graduation credits issues.

  • Master and PhD students Interschool Courses requirements.

According to the agreement of Professors’ Meeting, Graduate students are not allowed to take Interschool Courses if our Department offers the same course.

If you are happened to have another schedule that intersects with our Department courses and have to take Interschool Courses, please submit a Schedule Intersects Proof, the description of why you have to take those courses, and Application form of Interschool Courses to our Department office, so that your application could be evaluated by our Department’s Dean.
