phone The phenomenal growth of internet access, multimedia communications, and wireless communications has transformed broadband communication systems and networking technologies into one most important issues in developed countries. In response to this trend, the Institute of Communication Engineering was founded in 1999 in the NTHU, with faculty members coming from the Dept. of Electrical Engineering and the Dept. of Computing Science. This new Institute has focused its teaching and research activities on the development of communication systems and communication networks.

Research activities in communication systems include broadband communications, wireless communications, digital communications, error correction codes, signal processing for communications, communication network theory, and VLSI for communications. Research activities in communication networks include broadband internet, wireless networks, high-speed networks, fiber-optical networks, and network management. The faculty members of the Institute have had outstanding performance in both teaching and research. One faculty member has been an IEEE fe modem llow and was the winner of the 1999 Technical Achievement Award of the IEEE Computer Society. There are also two members having received the Distinguished Research Award from the National Science Council in Taiwan, and three members having received the Distinguished Teaching Award from National Tsing-Hua University. Moreover, some faculty members are holding editorial positions of prestigious journals or serving as committee of international conferences. The Institute will be seeking several more outstanding faculty members to further enhance its teaching and research performance in communication technologies.

3 The Institute offers 49 M.S. positions and 21 Ph.D. positions. The postgraduate courses in the Institute aim to train its postgraduates to address problems analytically and creatively. Postgraduate students are further required to participate in research projects, such that their ability to do research independently and their long-term research interests can be developed. Equipped with advanced computer systems, communication and network facilities, the institute is undoubted one of best choices for postgraduate study in communication technologies.
